The science behind the scent.

ScentMechanics is a field guide to how fragrance actually works — the ingredients, the chemistry, the manufacturing process, and the history behind it — written for anyone curious about what's really in a bottle of perfume, not just marketing copy.

Why we built this

Most consumer fragrance content is either pure marketing ("notes of amber and desire") or dense academic chemistry that's hard to actually use. ScentMechanics sits in between: real, accurate detail on ingredients, extraction methods, safety regulation, and the history of the industry — explained in plain language, with real chemistry data pulled directly from public scientific databases where relevant.

What's here

An ingredient encyclopedia covering naturals and synthetics used across the fragrance industry — origin, extraction method, and how each is actually used in a finished perfume — alongside longer articles on topics like how perfume is really made, natural vs. synthetic materials, and what safety standards like IFRA actually require.

Who runs ScentMechanics

ScentMechanics is operated by Micro-Media Ltd, based in Keighley, United Kingdom. We also operate ParfumWorks, a designer-inspired perfume retailer, and ScentSources, a B2B trade directory for fragrance industry suppliers — so this content is written from genuine, hands-on experience across the whole industry, not just secondhand research.
